Action Club Projects for Children aged 5 - 6 years old

Needs and capabilities

Children in this age group love to help and they can do many different things provided the directions are simple and the task is easy. The years one through to six is the time of developing physical awareness of the senses; they enjoy colours, touching things, smells and tastes and these all have a strong and vivid effect on a child's mind.

At this age their physical coordination and muscle control is normally still developing so it is not unusual for them to run into things, drop things and have accidents. All this means is that you need to take care to keep an eye on the environment you are working in to make sure there is nothing that can injure them.

For their development the year five through to six is a good time to get them used to following simple instructions. It is essential for their self-confidence that you give them plenty of positive encouragement and praise for their talents.

An excellent resource on stages of maturity for this age group can be found from Education for Life: Chapter 15: The Stages of Maturity & Chapter 16: The Foundation Years.

Basic project ideas:

Planting and watering small plants
Collecting litter

Visiting and working with elderly people on a regular basis, especially in retirement homes where elderly people can suffer from loneliness. Some elderly people love telling stories which young children can learn from

Making cards and letters for people who need some upliftment. For example, widows and widowers, women in battered women refuges and homes, people in hospitals

Basic fundraising for example helping to make simple cakes and sweets which you can help them sell. The money raised could then be used to buy toys which the children can deliver in person to other children in hospital. (You will need to check with the hospital first to make sure that it is safe to bring the children)

Collecting toys to be given to underprivileged children and children in hospitals

We need to grow this list and to do this most effectively we need your help. If your action club serves a worthwhile cause we have not yet listed, please note down the step-by-step instructions you took as well as a description and email it to projects@oneworldonepeople.org. Please also feel free to include photos. We can then post your project on this website for other action clubs to take inspiration from and copy. That way your good idea can spread all over the world and make an even bigger difference.
